Magical, mystical, fairytale-like: the best tips for romantics in the Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol

When it gets dark in the Austrian-Bavarian mountains...

...the time for magical experiences begins. Nature is shrouded in quiet shadows, perception is reduced to the essential, the senses are sharpened: the smoky smell of torches rises to the nose. Landscapes are silhouetted before the eye in the sparse light of lanterns. The sound of a horse-drawn carriage makes the magic perfect. Romantics can immerse themselves in nocturnal adventures from the storybook of the Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol. www.zugspitze.com

Silver rays: On snowshoes towards the full moon

In Lermoos, with its 1100 inhabitants, experts also lead snowshoe tours through the snow-covered mountain landscape under the starry sky every Monday. Especially under a full moon, the tour exudes a great deal of magic. The trail leads through quiet countryside with a moderate ascent of 200 metres in the silver glow. Guides from the Alpine School are with you and adjust the pace to the condition of the participants. The night adventure costs 42 euros including rental of snowshoes, poles and headlamp. Start is on Mondays and at full moon at 8.30 pm at the Alpine School Lermoos. During daylight hours, visitors have access to a network of a total of 170 kilometres of cleared winter hiking trails that open up in the Austrian-Bavarian border region.

Firelight: On the trail of the Romans with torches

The knowledge that your feet are walking on the old Roman road Via Claudia Augusta inspires your thoughts by torchlight. Once, the route between the Danube and the Adriatic paved the arduous way across the Alps. Marco Seitner from the Lermoos Alpine School accompanies the three-hour walk with stories about the country and its people. He wants to give the guests a magical experience: "The best part comes at the end of the tour, when we put the remains of the torches together to form a campfire and let the hike come to an end in the light of the dancing flames." The tour leads over two and a half kilometres of well-prepared paths through the silent ice crystal world. Tip: The route is even suitable for sledges for the smallest night hikers. The weekly excursion including torches and lanterns is a free offer for holders of the guest card. Dates on request.

Citylights: Evening carriage ride

In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the colourful houses with paintings, oriels and stucco in Ludwigstraße pass by the horse-drawn carriage, covered in white. The enchantingly illuminated ski resort has history and stories around every corner, which Josef Sailer is happy to pass on from the coach seat. In the process, he digs as deep as 2000 years into the past with his tales when he draws attention to the remains of the Merovingian settlement at the railway station between Garmisch and Partenkirchen. One hour with two horsepower costs 80 euros for up to five people. Horse-drawn sleigh or horse-drawn carriage rides are also available in the Zugspitz village of Grainau, in Ehrwald and Lermoos. The times can be booked individually on request.

Floodlit: skiing on the night cross-country ski run

Or would you prefer to do a little sport before going to bed? Every day until 10 pm, 850 metres of the approximately three-and-a-half-kilometre Krepbach cross-country ski trail in Grainau are in the focus of the floodlights. The easy terrain with only twelve metres of altitude difference is also easy to master for beginners. Rental equipment is available at the ski school on the lower village square in Grainau. During the day, there is a total of 16 kilometres of cross-country ski trails to choose from in the winter landscape around Grainau.

About the Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol

The Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol (ZABT) lies on the German and Austrian sides of the Zugspitze and unites the regions of the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena (with the villages of Ehrwald, Lermoos, Berwang, Biberwier, Bichlbach, Heiterwang am See and Namlos), Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitz village of Grainau. The Zugspitze towers over the destination as a prominent peak at 2962 m and is accessible by cable cars from the Bavarian and Tyrolean sides. If you spend your holidays here, you don't have to choose: urban flair in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, charming farmhouses in Grainau, rustic alpine pastures in the Berwangertal valley. The ZABT shows the whole diversity of an Alpine region that is modern and traditional at the same time.
