Summit of delights: The Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol tastes good

The Zugspitze is a great place to dine - the holiday offers are usually multi-course, with the panorama as a starter and a few bars of folk music for dessert.

Weisswurst breakfast in the gondola, live music on the mountain or the hut feast at the first or last rays of sunshine: In the Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol, Bavarian and Tyrolean cuisine is served in the form of selected holiday offers. Guests thus get to know the culinary side of the cross-border region as a piece of cultural heritage. Enjoyable hikes and a summit or two can always be nibbled along the way. And once holidaymakers have acquired a taste for it, another walk around the Zugspitze beckons. www.zugspitze.com

In Lermoos on the Tyrolean side of the Zugspitze, for example, guests can experience the wonderful combination of hiking and enjoyment. The summit house on the Grubigstein (2233 m) invites you to a special culinary feast, and the unique panoramic view is of course included. At the Genussgipfeltreffen, on selected dates (19 and 27 August as well as 2 and 9 September) meat from the farm's own hunt or farm is served at sunset. Vegetarian delicacies are also on offer at an altitude of more than 2000 metres. The mountain railway takes you comfortably to the top from 6.30 pm. If you want to reward yourself for a long walk, it takes three hours from the valley. Prefer to be out and about in the morning hours? Then the hut breakfast on 24 and 31 July and 7 and 14 August is ideal. From 7.30 a.m. (until 10 a.m.) guests start the day with fresh bread rolls, home-made jam and a glass of sparkling wine. Reservations are requested, tel. +43 5673 21026. By the way: the ascent and descent with the Grubigstein cable car costs 27 euros for adults, 16.20 euros for children and is discounted with the Zugspitz Arena Bayern-Tirol CARD, which holidaymakers receive in their accommodation.

In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Klammhaus on the Partnach is a special tip for hours of enjoyment. Especially when "Die Kathreiner" start their folk music. Just as the Zugspitz Arena transcends Bavaria-Tyrol borders, the music group convinces with its Austrian-Slovenian-Bavarian mix. On 31 July, guests enjoy the "sweet Klammpfanne" - a well-rounded speciality of Kaiserschmarrn, strudel, Röster and Bavarian cream - together with traditional songs in the cosy beer garden. On the music hike on 13 August, the melodies accompany you on the way over the Eckbauer (1237 m) and through the famous Partnachklamm gorge. Registration by phone +49 8821 9644900.

The Höllentalangerhütte (1381 m) is a base for hiking enjoyment and can be reached by a one-hour climb from Grainau. Its unique location on the rock makes it a tempting place to stop and a gateway to the Höllentalklamm gorge, which has been opened up by a one-kilometre-long secured path. As one of the German Alpine Club's most modern huts, it combines sustainability efforts with a rich offer of specialities from the region. From 6 am to 10 pm, hikers can stop in at the four cosy parlours or on the sunny terrace. Overnight guests can also choose between half board and breakfast, tel. +49 8821 9438548.

Weisswurst is as much a part of the Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol as Germany's highest mountain. The traditional Bavarian dish is particularly enjoyable on the Weißwurst gondola - either on the Eckbauerbahn in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or on the Tyrolean side on the Almkopfbahn in Bichlbach. The veal is accompanied by pretzels, wheat beer and a magnificent panoramic view. At Almkopf, the experience can be booked on 22, 24, 25 and 29 September (9 am to 12 pm) by calling +43 5674 812420 and costs 29 euros for adults and 20 euros for children. At Eckbauer, the date can be individually selected by booking 24 hours in advance on tel. +49 8821 3469; the price is 40 euros per person for a group of two to 16 people.

About the Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol

The Zugspitz Arena Bavaria-Tyrol (ZABT) is located on the German and Austrian sides of the Zugspitze and unites the regions of the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena (with the villages of Ehrwald, Lermoos, Berwang, Biberwier, Bichlbach, Heiterwang am See and Namlos), Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitz village of Grainau. The Zugspitze towers over the destination as a prominent peak at 2962 m and is accessible from the Bavarian and Tyrolean sides by cable car. If you spend your holidays here, you don't have to choose: urban flair in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, charming farmhouses in Grainau, rustic alpine pastures in the Berwangertal valley. The ZABT shows the whole diversity of an Alpine region that is modern and traditional at the same time.
