Mountain fire Lermoos

Lighting fires on slopes and ridges is an ancient tradition in and of itself

The early history of fire customs at the beginning of summer in Tyrol and in the Alpine region cannot be precisely documented. For the 100th anniversary of the commitment of the State of Tyrol to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1786, hearts and crosses were "drawn" as mountain fires for the first time in 1886.
During the Tyrolean freedom movement around 1809 (Andreas Hofer), the so-called chalk fires were lit in places that could be seen from afar, thus signaling the warning of the approaching enemy.
At the time of the national movement from the end of the 19th century to the 1940s, the solstice bonfires were stylized as a Germanic cultural asset. A new meaning for this folk culture was only sought after the Second World War. Starting in 1998, the Feuerberge Tirol initiative developed a common denominator for many of the thousands of mountaineers who set fire to the mountains in North-, East- and South-Tyrol at the beginning of summer with the “Fire for Peace” campaign.

Since 2010 the mountain fires in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena have been included in the national list of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
