St. Martin | Chaplaincy Church Namlos
In 1660 a chapel was built in Namlos
HISTORY:
A sovereign Schwaighof "Namles" is mentioned for the first time in the Urbar 1286. Namlos belonged politically and ecclesiastically to Imst, later to Berwang and since 1427 to the court of Ernberg. In 1660 a chapel was built in Namlos and consecrated on June 8, 1666 by the auxiliary bishop Jesse Perkhofer from Brixen. The heugite building of the church dates back to 1714, was enlarged in 1739 and consecrated by Prince Bishop Leopold in 1751. According to the contract, Namlos (with Kelmen) received its own chaplain (Jakob Greiter) in 1684 and has thus been a chaplaincy since 1686. Under Chaplain Hutter (1855-1864) the nave was lengthened by about 11 feet; under Chaplain Thomas Turner (1870-1880) three altars were renewed and the church was painted by the painter Kärle from Vorderhornbach.
EXTERIOR:
The nave is without sculptural articulation; the indented chancel is connected by sloping walls to the tower, which bears a shingle-covered onion dome.
INTERIOR:
The high altar was built in 1870/80 as a neo-Romanesque structure with a painting of St. Martin sharing his coat. The two figures of St. Peter and St. Paul also date from this period (painter and sculptor are unknown). On the side of the high altar, in niches on the left, are the Immaculata (the Immaculate), presumably by Josef Anton Renn from Imst, and on the right, St. Raphael the Archangel with Tobias (the model of all guardian angels), around 1780. The left side altar has the painting "Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" from around 1780, and the right side altar has the painting "Joseph with Jesus" by painter Kärle. The pulpit was made around 1870/80 and shows in paintings the four evangelists with their symbols. The Stations of the Cross were inserted in 1896.
On the right nave wall is the crucifix by Josef Georg Witwer from Imst, around 1770. The statues of the Sacred Heart, the Immaculata and the Resurrection were created by Alois Winkler from Weerberg. The frescoes show in the choir the sermon of Bishop Martin, accompanied by the medallions with the four evangelists framed with rocaille ornament (shell-shaped ornament) and floral hangings; in the nave in a wide stucco frame the dream of St. Martin and the division of the cloak, in the background view of Namlos. They were painted by "Anton Kirchmayr from Innsbruck 1956".
