Enjoy the amazing mountain fire in and around Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen!
The mountain fire takes place throughout the entire Werdenfelser Land on the eve of Johannitag (summer solstice) on 23 June.
This probably originally traces back to pagan celebrations of the summer solstice, which founded the tradition of the fire. Nowadays, Johannitag on 24 June is the occasion for this. On the evening before, on the Bavarian side of the Zugspitze, fires are lit on the mountains in honour of the holy fire.
In Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the midsummer fires are particularly impressive. The entire Waxensteinkamm is like an unparalleled chain of lights; on the other mountains countless fire shine from different locations, always different but always equally impressive. In good weather, the boys climb up the mountain and reach their fire sites on very narrow, rocky positions and ridges. In the dark of night, equipped with torches or headlamps, they climb back down into the valley. The next day, the saint's day is celebrated.
The festival of 1,000 lights near the upper village square
On Thursday from 19:00, 1,000 burning lights are also lit at Waldwinkl (only in dry weather), so the whole place is romantically illuminated with lights. In Waldwinkl, everyone who is interested is invited for a beer, some punch or snacks from the grill. The Johannifeuer (midsummer fire) on top of the mountains can be seen very well from there as well. It is worth a visit!
Johannifeuer (midsummer fire) on Wank
The Wank cable car runs until 23.00 on the evening of the Johannifeuer. At the Wank summit, a large fire is lit and Sonnenalm is open, serving food and drink. From here, you have a wonderful view over the entire Loisachtal and the Johannifeuer on the surrounding mountains.
