Enjoy the mountain fires in and around Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen

On the eve of St John's Day -  23 June - the mountain fires burn all over the Werdenfelser Land.

Originally, it was probably the pagan summer solstice celebrations that established the tradition of the fires. Nowadays, St. John's Day, 24 June, is used as an occasion. The evening before, on the Bavarian side of the Zugspitze, fires are lit on the mountains in honour of the Holy Fire.

In Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen the Johannifeuer are particularly impressive. The whole Waxenstein ridge resembles a unique chain of lights, on the remaining mountains countless fires shine and from the most different locations it looks again and again different and equally impressive. When the weather is good, the young boys climb up the mountain and reach their fireplaces on sometimes very narrow, rocky places and ridges. In the dark night they climb back down into the valley equipped with torches or headlamps. The next day the name bearers celebrate their day.
