St. Martin's Chapel, Ehrwald

The Martinskapelle is the oldest ecclesiastical building in Ehrwald.

The chapel, rich in paintings and sculptures, was built in 1618. Restorations were carried out in 1620, 1833 (with extension), 1984 and 2006. The central figures on the high altar depict the chapel's patron saint St. Martin with mitre and crozier, St. Joseph with the infant Jesus on the left and St. Anthony on the right. The plague saints Sebastian (far left) and Rochus (far right) come from the workshop of the Imst artist Franz Xaver Renn (around 1835), as does the carving of the kneeling St. Florian with a burning house in the left side niche. Above the tabernacle is a copy of the famous image of the Virgin Mary by Lukas Cranach (St. Jacob's Cathedral in Innsbruck). The Stations of the Cross date from the 19th century. The little church has a small gallery and an unadorned bell in the tower. The facade figure of St. Martin was carved by Mario Gasser from Ehrwald. The lime tree behind the chapel, designated as a natural monument, was planted around 1689, probably together with the one near the rectory and a third one near the church, which fell victim to a hurricane in 1926 and thus blocked the church entrance before the entrance for Holy Confirmation. The patron saint service is celebrated in St Martin's Chapel around 11 November, and in May there is a May devotion every Wednesday at 7.00 pm, In October, there is an October rosary every Friday at 5.00 pm.
