ZUGSPITZ-8

a cycle route for everyone around the Zugspitze

Have you ever circumnavigated the Zugspitze by bike? The Zugspitz-8 leads around the Wettersteingebirge and the striking mountain Daniel (Ammergauer alps). The border between Bavaria and Tyrol runs right through the middle, which makes the tour so special. The cycle tour of several days results in a boundless bike experience with a lot of variety for young and old. A total of 112 km of paths lead through the Zugspitz Arena Bayern-Tirol. For cyclists in good condition, the Zugspitz 8 can still be extended with various demanding additional routes. The entrance is possible from numerous starting points and is possible with Mountainbike and E-Mountainbike.

The cycle tour of several days starts in Griesen, from where the path leads via the Neidernachtal valley to Plansee. Cross the road at Hotel Forelle and cycle the Panoramaweg above Plansee to the canal bridge. Continue along the Plansee until you reach the next bridge. Cross the bridge and follow the path in the direction of Heiterwang. Here you can relax perfectly with a bath break and enjoy the numerous leisure possibilities at the lake.

After the Heiterwanger See up to the first bridge, there turn left and follow the Grundbach up to the underpass. Pass under the main road and continue straight on across the road (L21).  Follow the road via Wengle and Lähn to Lermoos. When you reach the Untergarten, turn left towards Gries and follow the road (B187) to the junction for the railway station.

Cross the railway track and continue in the direction of Ehrwald. At the first level crossing turn right into "Scheibenweg". At the end of the road cross the bridge and follow the path along the Lussbach into the Moos. Cross the Lussbach again and continue in the direction of Ehrwald. Follow the main road along Martinsplatz and Kirchplatz to the Ehrwalder Almbahn valley station.

From there the cycle path leads to the Ehrwalder Alm (alternative: use the Ehrwalder Almbahn with bike transport). Continue towards Igelsee with descent through the Gaistal valley to Leutasch, via Klamm, Platzl, Ober- and Unterweidach, Burggraben to Gasthof Mühle, then follow the asphalt road towards Mittenwald.

At Mittenwald turn left in a sharp right bend towards Lautersee and Ferchensee, continue to Elmau. Cross the village and continue in the direction of Wamberg. Past the St. Anna Chapel and the cemetery, follow the road straight to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. When you arrive in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, turn left onto Auenstraße, pass the Olympia Skistadium and continue along the railway track in the direction of Kreuzeck and Grainau. Then turn right into the "Kreuzeckbahnstraße" and turn left into the "Degernauweg". Follow this road until it joins the "Zugspitzstraße" and the "Waxensteinstraße" in Grainau.

For an additional route worth seeing, the Panoramaweg leads to the crystal-clear Eibsee lake, which lies directly at the foot of the Zugspitze and offers wonderful bathing opportunities. At the end of "Waxensteinstraße" turn left towards Eibsee and turn right again into Höhenrainweg. This leads past the Kriegergedächtniskapelle with a great view of Grainau.

Continue down the cycle path to Griesen. Cross the railway tracks in Griesen and cycle on to Ehrwald Schanz. After Schanz cross the railway tracks, past the Häselgöhr waterfall to Ehrwald.

The bike tour can be started from any place. The route between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Ehrwald can be shortened by train.
